Title
A Consortium Approach To Courseware Design In Mathematics
Abstract
The Courseware Manager is an implementation of a simple protocol for integrating courseware materials in a situation where there is a variety of authors using a variety of software authoring tools. It has been developed by Interactive Courseware Research and Development (ICRD) Group of which the authors are members, and the TLTP-funded UKMCC (U.K. Mathematics Courseware Consortium) which brings together over 30 institutions producing 50 interactive computer-based modules in mathematics at first year degree level. One example of a module on calculus is illustrated. The project's experience suggests that the TLTP's EPOC (Enabling Provision of Open Courseware) Working Group's plans to establish an agreed public-domain Framework for Open Courseware are well-founded, because the UKMCC itself has completed 30 modules on a variety of platforms: Toolbook under Windows, Hypercard on Macintosh, and Authorware Professional on Macintosh and Windows. All Authorware modules run on Mac and Windows with minimal conversion overheads. Conversion of other modules, mainly from Toolbook to Hypercard, is underway, with one module (Concepts in Differentiation) already successfully converted. This demonstrates that cross-platform standards can be successfully adopted. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
