•We investigate the effects of boundary spanning on team trust and satisfaction.•Multigroup structural equation models were used to examine our research model.•Trusting beliefs have a positive impact on team trust that influences satisfaction.•Within-boundary teams exhibit higher trusting beliefs and process satisfaction.•Within-boundary teams demonstrate a stronger trust–satisfaction relationship.
