•We propose hybrid kinetic/FBA models as an enhancement of traditional FBA.•Hybrids models are built with stoichiometric information and selected kinetics.•Resulting models are optimized via a tailored outer approximation.•Few kinetics suffice to dramatically improve accuracy of standalone FBA models.•Key velocities to be included are those reducing the degrees of freedom of network. |
