Abstract | ||

Multiple-vehicle accidents caused by reduced visibility conditions occur during localized fog and often result in fatalities and injuries. The extreme variability in density, predictability, and location of the hazard further complicates the task of improving highway safety conditions. This paper presents a novel approach for estimating visibility condition using an onboard camera and a digital map encoding traffic signs informations. Ability to respond in a timely fashion to sudden local change in visibility conditions is specifically investigated. |
