•A direction guidance system is introduced to facilitate aircraft evacuation.•A metamodel-based optimization method is proposed to alleviate simulation burden.•The egress time can be greatly saved by the proposed direction guidance system.•The Boeing 767-300 and Boeing 747-400 are used as illustrative cases.
