•We re-use the Globcover-2005 reference dataset in comparative accuracy assessments.•The thematic accuracies of the Globcover, LC-CCI and MODIS maps were compared.•The map accuracies were assessed in terms of 5 user-applications.•We identified improvement priorities of the global land cover maps.•There is no single-figure accuracy estimate expressing map fitness for all purposes. |
