Title
Performance Characterization and Optimization Assessment of Bioinformatics Applications.
Abstract
Technological advances in DNA sequencing and cryo-electron microscopy are generating vast amounts of data that are enabling research discoveries crucial to understanding illnesses and developing personalized medical treatments. Analyzing these data requires continual development of better and faster computational techniques. SDSC, with funding from Dell and Intel, carried out a project to characterize the performance and identify optimization opportunities for key bioinformatics applications. The selected applications were GATK and GenomicsDB, for analyzing DNA sequence data, and RELION for analyzing cryo-electron microscopy data. This paper describes results and recommendations devised in this project.
