•We considers heterogeneous 1-out-of-N warm standby systems subject to shocks.•The resilience to shocks decreases with the number of experienced shocks.•A preventive replacement policy with respect to shocks is considered.•The expression for availability of a system is derived.•Optimization problem for replacement policy is considered.
