•Renal interstitial fibrosis quantification based on detection of all tissue structures.•Combination of colour spaces, structural features and multiscale texture information.•A 40-image ground truth set with interstitial fibrosis regions annotated is prepared.•Average error within 9% compared to the average pathologist's visual quantification.•Inter-pathologist correlation increased under the aid of automated quantification results.
