•This study examined a machine vision algorithm suited to detect citrus fruit and tree trunks.•A multi-elliptical model was constructed in Cr-Cb co-ordinates to detect citrus fruit and tree trunks.•This algorithm’s computational complexity is much simpler than machine learning algorithms.•Brightness correction changed the position and area of elliptical boundary model. |
