•We decompose sEMG image into multiple streams by the electrodes layout to model correlation between muscles and gestures.•A two-stage multi-stream CNN framework is proposed for sEMG based gesture recognition in muscle computer interface.•Comprehensive evaluations on 3 benchmark datasets shows that it outperformed the single-stream CNN for gesture recognition. |
