•We identified a comprehensive set of smart TV UX factors via think-aloud and diary studies.•We developed psychometrically strong measurement scales of smart TV UX factors.•We examined the empirical effects of the identified smart TV UX factors using a large-scale survey data, confirming their significant effects on user satisfaction and usage intention.
