•Efficiency of hybrid vehicles with DC-DC converter is analysed for realistic driving.•Dual-phase-shift-controlled dual-active-bridge DC-DC converter losses are expressed.•Switching loss or average absolute current in conduction loss derivations are complex.•Accurate DC-DC converter efficiency is predicted for a wide converter operation range.•Converter power loss accuracy can influence significantly fuel consumption prediction.
